Niamh Mc Carthy visits the school
We were lucky enough to get a visit from our very own local Paralympic hero Niamh Mc Carthy in school today. Niamh won a silver medal in the Women's Discus Throw F41 Final. She spoke to the students about her incredible journey and even showed off her silver medal. The medals made for the Paralympic Games feature braille - tiny raised bumps that spell out "Rio 2016 Paralympic Games" and can be read by the visually impaired by moving their fingers over the bumps. They also have a tiny device inside the medal that makes a rattling noise when the medal is shaken. This way those that are visually impaired will know what colour their medal is based on how loud the rattle is. Gold makes the loudest rattling sound and bronze makes the quietest.

You all received the notes for the Science Fair last week. The projects are due in on Monday 14th November 2016 so it's time to get the ball rolling! This week's Talking Tuesday homework is discuss with your child their ideas and help them to problem-solve and plan out their projects. Please ensure that they are getting their ideas together at this point so there's not a last minute panic the week before!
Talking Tuesday: Space Week The European Space Agency and NASA are looking for astronauts to take part in future missions to Mars. Do you have what it takes to be an astronaut? What qualities do you need to be an astronaut? What sacrifices would you have to make? What would be the most challenging aspect of the job? Which role would you like to take on the team?
Space WeekThis week we are celebrating Space Week in class. A lot of our lessons this week have a space theme. In Geography we are comparing the surface of Earth to the surface of Mars. In History we are studying momentous moments in Space History and learning about the history of the Rosetta space probe and writing a time-line. In Art we will be creating and designing a martian that has adapted to life on Mars, and also using clay and sand to create a terrain which is similar to Mars. In English we will be applying for a job as an astronaut on the very first human mission to Mars. In Music we will be listening and responding to Gustav Holt 'The Planets'. Oh I almost forgot to mention that in Science we will be designing and launching our very rockets into space! It's going to be an exciting week-watch this space for all the updates!
Talking Tuesday
It's that time of the week again. This week's Talking Tuesday topic is coat of arms or family crests. In Geography we were looking at the the Cork Coat of Arms and the meaning behind it. I want you to do some research into your family name with your child and find out the meaning and history behind it. Find out if your family name has a crest. Here are some useful links to help you:

How can a ship like the Titanic float, but a pebble sink? This was our scientific question last week. We investigated this by placing a ball of Plasticine in a bowl of water and observing it sinking to the bottom. We then took that same ball of Plasticine and molded it into a shape that would float. We then had to work in groups to design a boat with a sheet of tinfoil and see which boat would hold the most marbles before it sank.
Here are the results: Minecrafters: 17 marbles Pokemons: 6 marbles Emojis: 7 marbles Septic Eyes: 45 marbles (wow!) Neons: 7 marbles We learned that when a boat floats, it pushes aside (i.e., displaces) water to make room for itself. But, the water around the boat pushes back. And the more water a boat displaces, the more force there will be pushing back on the boat. This force supports the boat. Boats that displace a lot of water can generally carry a heavier load than boats that displace only a little water. We concluded that big boats hold more marbles; strength—sturdy boats don’t crumple under a load; and stability—wide boats don’t roll over as easily as narrow boats. Talking Tuesday Today in Geography we were learning all about all the things that make Cork such a fantastic place to live. The children really enjoyed learning some facts about Cork and sharing with the class their favourite places to visit in Cork. For Talking Tuesday homework this week I would like you to discuss with your child what makes Cork so special.
Help with Irish homework Parents are you struggling to help your child with their Irish homework? There is a free online programme for adult learners of Irish at www.isfeidirliom.ie/. It is a very useful website containing audio, videos, worksheets and interactive activities and is designed for absolute beginners so why not give it a go? You can even involve your child by doing the online activities together- have fun learning! Well here it goes; it is our first week of homework this week and we are easing you back into it! Here is the outline of the homework for this week. Irish answers are to be written in the homework copy. Dictation sentences in English and Irish will be starting next week. Just make sure you write in your journals how long it has taken you to do the work each night so I know if I need to adjust it. As always this is subject to change.
